What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy has been approved by the British Medical Association for more than 60 years. It is a form of therapy which, with professional intervention, enables a client to enlist the help of the unconscious mind. It is a client-centred process and allows the client to focus their attention internally, to re-assess resources and to create new associations, patterns and behaviours.

Hypnosis does not claim to perform miracles, but it does create a state of awareness that can be useful for self help. Psychological problems from unwanted habits and irrational anxiety states can usually be traced to distorted, one-sided or unbalanced attitude that have become deeply embedded in the mind at an unconscious level. Clients that attend hypnotherapy have often exhausted the resources of their logical, conscious minds.

It has been claimed that 80 per cent of patients who visit their GP are suffering from psychosomatic disorders – illnesses which have origins in the mind. These include various forms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, digestive problems, aches and pains. Due to time restraints and lack of access to alternative therapies on the NHS, GP’s are often forced to treat these complaints with medication. Although they may provide temporary relief from the effects, they do not treat the underlying case.

Hypnotherapy can be applied to assist with a number of issues* such as weight management, smoking or alcohol use, anxiety disorders, stress, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, sleep difficulties, pain management, fears and phobias and confidence issues.
